Wealth over Riches

BY: Paul Campbell

In class we talked about the importance of building wealth. We learned to focus on increasing our wealth rather than focusing on becoming rich. A number of factors can affect the accumulation of wealth. Things such as the environment we are in and spending habits can have a drastic affect on our wealth.
I came across an article that spoke about the gap between black and white families. The contrast in the amount of wealth that black families and white families have is extraordinary. Studies have shown that on average white families have accumulated nine times as much wealth in comparison to blacks.

While education and inheritance does play a role in building wealth, the biggest reason for the huge gap lies in home ownership. A larger amount of whites own homes compared to black families, close to 30% more white families own homes. With owning a home, most of their wealth lies in their ownership. It is smarter to own a home instead of renting a home. Renting a home is almost like burning money, it goes toward that one month of living and that’s it.

While education and income can be used as an excuse for the gap in wealth, studies have shown that white families are smarter in their spending. Even with equal income between the two, whites are able to build toward their wealth because they already have cash saved up from smart spending. On the other hand blacks are using their income for emergencies.

Increase in education will help build income but even with high income, money management plays a big role. Black families need to make sure that they use their income wisely and work toward wealth rather than riches. Living within one’s means and being frugal so that money can be saved to purchase a home can help close this enormous gap.

Evolution of Video Games

By :Hakeem Allen

Video gaming has come a long way since the early days of Pong and Pac-man. We can now play affordable games of high definition with 3D graphics and awesome interactivity in the comfort of our home. Taking for granted the little and subtle improvements made to each and every consoles before becoming what they are today. In a way, the aggressive competition between companies of video game consoles had churned out the superior features of video gaming to bring to us the excellent quality we see today. The picture quality improves every time a new generation of the PlayStation releases. With the PS4 being released this year, it will almost seem as if you are watching TV while playing.

PlayStation (1994): The PlayStation released in December 1994 in Japan. It was the first ubiquitous series of console and hand held devices. It was part of the fifth generation of video game consoles competing against the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64.

Huawei - New cellphone

By Felton Hill

The Chinese company, Huawei has produced a new smartphone, which the company has declared as to be the fastest on the market. The company was just recently declared the third place in wireless equipment. Recently it has released a huge product that has been announced as the “world’s fastest phone”.

Huawei announced the Ascend P2, its main device for the first half of 2013. It is a thin smartphone that features a 4.7-inch 720p HD display with a pixel density of 315 pixels per inch. A 1.5-GHz quad-core processor with 1 GB of RAM powers it. The phone comes with 16 GB of onboard storage and supports micro SD cards for extra storage such as music, photos and videos. The P2's camera rates 13 megapixels and includes a flash, backside illumination and a 1080p HD video capture.

During the presentation of the device, Huawei constantly compared it to the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. The company made the message clear about saying that its device is superior to those of its competitors. Two specific features that I like more than the iPhone 5 is that the P2 has a gorilla glass 2 top screens for scratch resistance, and lower power consumption. The Ascend P2's screen is also sensitive enough to use with gloves on. One downside is that the screen is of a lower resolution than recent models from LG, HTC and Nokia, and can display 720p HD video rather than 1080p output.

Below are links and videos that tell more about the product:

Renewable/Alternative Energy. Invest?

By: Kabeya J. Kabongo

The latest revolution that the human race experienced was, and is notably the information age. The information age is also commonly referred to as the computer age or digital age. We underwent a drastic change. That change was from an age of industrialization to a bright, new age of information computerization. The term “digital revolution” is associated with “Information Age”, just as the term “industrial revolution” is associated with “industrial age.” With an increased worldwide focus on alternative and renewable energy, there is room to speculate that maybe the next age could possibly be named the “Alternative/Renewable Energy Age,” furthermore the “Energy Revolution.”

In America and abroad, J.P. Morgan alone has invested 3.8 billion dollars and raised another 3.9 billion dollars for numerous renewable energy projects. They have had a hand in financing approximately one hundred wind power projects in twenty different states. J.P. Morgan has also invested in a number of solar power projects including photovoltaic systems. Photovoltaic systems use solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity.

In China, Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd produces industry leading solar products for residential, commercial, industrial and utility applications. Suntech has delivered more than twenty million photovoltaic panels to over a thousand customers in more than eighty countries. Suntech is very motivated in their mission to “provide everyone with reliable access to nature's cleanest and most abundant energy source.”

Yingli Energy is another China based company, yet it happens to supply fully vertically integrated photovoltaic panels to Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, France, South Korea, China, Japan, Australia, and the United States. One could assume that Yingli Energy deserves a large amount of credit for the absolute outbreak of renewable energy research worldwide.

There are numerous other Renewable Energy researching companies, and several other forms of energy that have been created or discovered. Quite a few notable scientists believe that renewable energy is the way of the future, and natural resources such as gas, oil and other minerals will become obsolete. If this actually holds up and there is another revolution near, wouldn’t you want to own shares of stock in the companies which produce the replacements for the most widely used natural resources in the world?
