Move Over Cable Companies, Competition Has Arrived

By Christopher Malveaux

This week, tech giant Google made it official: Google Fiber is coming to Austin. Residents of the hip Texas city will be the beneficiaries of Internet speeds of 1-gigabit, roughly 100 times faster than current speeds. In Kansas City, where the service launched last fall, 1-gigabit service costs $70 per month. For $120 per month, consumers get Google's TV service in addition to gigabit speeds. The company also offers seven years of free Internet service at current (5 mbps) speeds, after a $300 installation fee. It's entirely possible that Google Fiber could cost more in the future, but for now Google says it expects prices in Austin to be "roughly similar to Kansas City."

Here are a few reasons why you should want Google Fiber to come to your city as well:

Goodbye buffering: It's the bane of Internet users everywhere. How many times have you been watching a video on YouTube or elsewhere on the Web, only to have the stream freeze up, forcing you to sit there like a chump while you wait for the video to resume?

Slate's Farhad Manjoo describes a Google Fiber demonstration in which a company official played five high-definition YouTube videos simultaneously without a hitch. Most users are unlikely to watch five videos at the same time, but the point stands: With Google Fiber's gigabit speeds, say goodbye to buffering.
And it's not just YouTube: Imagine being able to download a full-length high-definition movie in a matter of seconds.

The price is right: It's hard to beat free. Let's say you're content with your current broadband speeds and if you don't want to pay for a gigabit. Google is offering at least seven years of free Internet service at current national average broadband speeds of 5 mbps, after a one-time $300 installation fee.

  1. Wow, I remember reading about this service when it was unveiled in Kansas City a few months ago. One of the things I love about Google's business model is that it makes a lot of features free for the end users while still generating a profit for the company. It's genius! This would be an excellent service to come to Atlanta, even though it's doubtful, as we would certainly have millions upon millions of people signing up for the service. It would be great if this would force the cable/internet companies to change how they make their money; it is possible to make money without charging consumers an arm and a leg!

  2. Great Post! It’s amazing how much the internet service has improved over the years. Google offered of seven years of free Internet service at current national average broadband speeds of 5 mbps, after a one-time $300 installation fee would definitely affect all the internet companies.

  3. Good post, I enjoyed the second video that showed how google fiber is exponentially faster than the internet we are used to now. I definitely hopes this comes to my home town. What I was most surprised by was the low cost. It is somewhat affordable which will definitely draw a lot of customers. For me speed does matter and I am one of those consumers who hate when something has to buffer. I definitely want to see this type of speed for myself.

  4. WOW!!! This is a great program. Once this hits mainstream other internet companies are gonna be in for a rude awakening. $300 dollars isnt a bad price either. The second video was great because it gives a visual that make it easy to but 2 and 2 together that this new system is going to be that much faster than the average internet programs. I cant wait to get a chance to use it!!!

  5. This is amazing! I hope that the coverage expands nationwide. I believe with Mr. Peterson when we said that the other companies are going to be in for a rude awakening. Watching the videos make me excited about what is coming soon. I can't wait to use this either!

  6. Awesome post. The possibility of not having to wait for buffering and downloading movies in minutes is great. I would be willing to pay a few dollars extra to experience the luxury of REAL high speed internet. I am interested to find out when Google Fiber will come out to a wider audience. I would love to wake up every morning with the assurance of quality internet and the best technology has to offer.

  8. Nice post and content! Google is really becoming innovators over the rest of their competition. I just hope the cable companies can keep up before google takes over the whole market. Google fiber will soon open up avenues for online steaming T.V. and a lot of other ideas. I can't wait till they bring Google Fiber to Houston, Texas! No more buffering!!!
