The Impact of Social Media

by Jessie Johnson

Social media are websites that allow social interaction between individuals. Social media allows us the ability to communicate with people without their being a personal/concrete interaction.  This social interaction is growing rapidly throughout the globe through social sites.  More people are joining sites such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and many more to interact with friends, relatives, employers, and strangers.  This form of interaction is rapidly changing the world around us. The globe is not the same that it once was twenty, or even ten years ago. Therefore; Social media has a profound impact on humanity in some positive and negative ways.

The introduction of social media has changed the world in many ways. Since 2003; with the creation of Myspace, The globe has saw increase social media content and communication among individuals.  This increase in social media content has paved the way for the internet to be popular.  I remember being in middle school and only wanting the internet for Myspace.  That was my stepping stone in exploring what else the internet had to offer.  However with increase tastes and popularity we saw the fall of Myspace and the rise of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Social media is further pushing the extent of the internet and how we interact with the entire world. The rise of everything popular such as shopping online, apps, emails, and other things was fueled by the popularity of social media. Social media is so important that many business who do not utilize the interactions will fall short in profits and margins. In addition, social media can make the world much smaller.  For example a child in China learning American culture can Skype their American counterpart in seconds. Another example will be a Investment Banker on Wall Street getting stock information from another banker in Japan and London simultaneous.  Lastly, Mountain Dew McLaughlin its "create a new dew campaign" on social media outlets, drawing larger consumers to the brand.  All these would have not been possible if it wasn't for social media.  Social media is truly changing the world and internet.

Social media has many positive effects and negative effects on  society.  In recent years with the creation of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, social media has never been so popular.  Therefore; these websites serves as mediums, keeping the globe socially active.  For example; Facebook allows people to communicate with each other, comment on people status, and join different organizations.  This site allow for a billion people to be socially active around the globe.  Secondly, social media increases a person computer capability.  It was during the Myspace era when I had the ability to actually single-handily make a webpage by copying and pasting html codes and manipulating those codes.  I learned almost every manipulating code there was. Also, using social media can also help people who have difficulty socializing with people.  Since there is a computer screen then a actually person, people feel more relaxed.  The negative side effect is that is many people are not learning the necessary soft skills that would be learned if they were actually present for the conversation.  Another positive is Social media help people search careers, build wide range networks, and have the world at their computer screen.  A negative will be that many people have lost their careers, integrity, relationships, popularity, and lives due to social media. Another negative is that many people personal information is becoming comprised because of an every increasing fraud ring. I believe that the positives outweigh the negatives for the use of social media.  We just need to take the time to guard ourself and make rational decisions when we post on the internet.

  1. Social media and the media in general have on occasion been labeled as "a load of horse s**t". Recruiters say that one of the reasons why new hires have such poor writing skills is because of the constant communication in short bursts of characters that social media sites like Twitter and Instagram facilitate. It is those exact character limits that are breaking down the grammar of English. Sentences and phrases have to be constructed and formatted to fit the limit. While it takes cleverness some times to get the full meaning of a sentence across in the limit of the characters, proper communication skills start to suffer. Another complaint against media and social media sites is that the fabrication of news and rumors just to get attention or viewers has become rampant. Several celebrities that are breathing to this day have died according to Twitter and news stations have been caught changing stories to "make for more excitement".As humans have done since the beginning of time, they has questions like how did this happen, what are the repercussions,or who's to blame? As far as how did this happen and who's to blame, I think the answers are similar in that the popularity of Twitter and Facebook are their own downfalls. People frequent them and therefore people who pay for people will pay Facebook for advertisement feed the cycle along with those people who abuse the websites

  2. First, in response to Noah's comment, I think the evolution of our news to an instant format has fueled the changing of stories to "make for more excitement". Today, it's all about who can get the word out first rather than who can be the most accurate. Look into the confusion about all the stories that came out about Sandy Hook when it first happened for a great example.

On another note, I do credit MySpace for introducing me to the Internet and all that I could find that wasn't flash games. And by proxy, I can award Social Media that title. But, as SM has grown and gotten more complex, I have begun to regret this decision. My greatest fear is the volume of information Social Mexia can share with businesses, recruiters, and whoever else wants it. Even google as stated that they will start selling your precious data. Facebook forces you to give away your location.

Just think, if the government wanted to track you they could, without effort. The Internet is making it easy enough for anyone with knowledge and a keen eye to do the same.

  3. Social media is definitely making a case of the new age we are entering into called the "Information Age". A lot of of our everyday resources include using social media, whether its as simple as communicating to a person online or as complicated of telling followers what we are doing today. The adaptation of social media into the routine workplace has helped businesses progress into modern times and created higher revenues. I agree with this blog post and the format of it also.

  4. Social Media has been seen as a fad until these couple past few years. This has become a revolutionary movement and change in how people communicate. Even though it has it's benefits there are, I think downfalls to having so much social media as well.

  5. Scial media is really taking over. In a lot of ways, some people are not hipped to this new change. I know that I was not really ready for it, but I had to get hipped to the change. Know that I am hipped to this social media there are so many different sites and apps tasht I have to be up to date on.

  6. Due to the influence of social media, it has become quite simple for a large wave of people to become aware of political or social movements. Just a few days ago, celebrities began to endorse the "equal" movement which was designed to support equal treatment for all groups of people with no regard to their sexual orientation. This idea quickly spread throughout the nation as many people assigned the logo to be their profile picture. Social media has truly allowed people to connect in a quick, cheap, and efficient manner.

  7. Social media is a new trend that has swept through the world at a rate we have never seen before. The fact that Facebook would be the world's third largest country if it were one is amazing. The world has become much smaller and easier to contact people globally. The age of social media is only increasing and new technology is appearing every year.

  8. Social media has influenced our society in so many ways since its inception. Our world is completely different than the one we lived in 20 years ago. There are several positives to social media including easier communication, building your business online among many other things. I think the negative aspect of social media is making people so easily accessible and a loss of privacy.

  9. The use of social media in our society has significantly increased over the past decade. From myspace to instagram, more and more individuals are connected to various social media platforms each and every second of the day. Thus, the information placed on social media plays a significant role on how we perceive others and also influences much of our decision making. Nevertheless, social media is and will continue to be a key player in the lives of individuals.

  10. I believe that social media has greatly impacted our society especially in the way in which we are able to communicate with one another. Businesses use social media sites to market products to customers as well as receive immediate responses from their customers. Even educators use the sites to communicate and make announcements to their students about homework, quizes and tests. Pressing forward I believe that social media will continue to be a staple in major societies.

  11. I feel that social media has had many positive impacts on our culture, as this post stated, but some pretty big negatives come from it as well. People have become less personable and are beginning to lose necessary skills to communicate. As Mr. Terry stated, people have become accustomed to typing short statements because of the character limits, and their writing skills are beginning to suffer as a result of that. People also use the internet to portray something that they are not, and a lot of times say things that they would never say in person. The benefits of social media can not be ignored though, and this is something that is here to stay for a while.

  12. I believe that social media is a double edged sword. While it has had a positive impact on our lives and culture, it also has quite a few blunders. Even though social media has allowed people to connect and build relationships with more people online, many people struggle with building lasting relationships in person. Because of this, the ability to be personable in the flesh will become increasingly valuable.

  13. I agree that social media is a growing factor which will continue to improve the lives of people. Not only does social media connect people for leisure, but it is also used in the business world. Sites such as LinkedIn, and others. Also I feel there will also be a lot more social media sites being built for companies in an internal way. This internal company social media site will better the communication of the virtual world of business.

  14. Social media is something that has increasingly become a part of how all humans partake in their interactions. I believe social media is a viable source of communication among friends, family, and co-workers. Each of the videos above did a great job of illustrating the positive and negative effects social media can have. As a small business owner, companies such as Facebook and Twitter can potentially serve as a powerful marketing tool. For many college students social media sites enable us to re-connect with friends and family from back home. However, there are some negative effects to this social media crave. Identity theft is common and online poaching has become common. Sex offenders have easy access to pools of people in different locations by posing to be someone there not. In general there are a number of factors that come into the social media equation. I believe it is something that can be very useful however, should be handled with caution.
