When AT&T first met the iPhone

By: Devin Gray
The history of the iphone line of phones begins with Steve Jobs' direction that Apple incorporated.  Engineers investigate touch-screens and tablet-computers which later came to fruition with the ipad. Former CEO Ed Whitacre says that Steve Jobs was secretive about his new invention and that AT&T placed a big bet on being the iPhone's exclusive service provider.

The iPhone at first could not be added to an AT&T Business account, and any existing business account discounts cannot be applied to an iPhone AT&T account, which AT&T changed in late January 2008.Early estimates by technology analysts estimated sales of between 250,000 to 700,000 units in the first weekend alone, with strong sales continuing after the initial weekend. As part of their quarterly earnings announcement, AT&T reported that 146,000 iPhones were activated in the first weekend. Though this figure does not include units that were purchased for resale on ebay. or otherwise not activated until after the opening weekend, it is still less than most initial estimates.  It is also estimated that 95% of the units sold are the 8 GB model.

It’s safe to say that the introduction of the original iPhone in 2007 started a new wave of how we use cellular and mobile devices. Smartphones had actually been in use thanks to the Blackberrys that many business professionals were using in order to keep in contact with work and co-workers; with the release of the iPhone, more casual consumers began to see how smartphones could work in their lives, which has led to an increase in the mobile market today.

  3. Greeat Job Devin. I personally do not have an IPhone, but this information was valuable to any and everyone. The amount of innovation by apple over the past decade is amazing and I hope that Apple will continue to reinvent themselves.

  4. Honestly, I do believe that the innovation and creation of the iphone was huge step in technology and it allowed society to do things on-the-go wirelessly that they could never do before. It would be naive to say that the iphone has not made many issues easier such as sending an email, a picture or even sending a paper or business proposal to your boss. I recently just purchased my first iphone ever within the past year and it is really amazing. I do not even have an iphone 5 just an iphone 4S but I do not need the 5 this phone alone is phenomenal enough for me, the touch screen and capabilities of the phone makes many tasks easier.

  7. Apple is a great company that offers technology for every individual, company and firm. Apple represents the epitome of technological advancement, creativity and brand management. Throughout the years, they have satisfied consumer demands and revolutionized the smartphone, tablet and computer industry. Apple is a great company, but I doubt this successful trend can last.

  11. The iPhone will go down as a staple of this era. The innovation of the technology and the operating system will be a precedent equal to that of the computer and automobile. Th network the is required to keep these devices working is innovative enough. But the constant pressure and innovation from the growing app markets will only further this precedent.

It took me many years but I can now proudly say I am one of many iPhone users.

  12. After reading this blog, I still find it interesting how the iPhone has consistently released a new version of their cell phone each year since 2007. This annual release has led iPhone consumers to remain on their feet, anticipating the next new look or features of the phone. This has definitely been a clever strategy for Apple because this allows them to keep the name of the product and just provide updates. I didn't become an iPhone user until the Fall of 2011, and now I have no intention of going back to other companies. AT&T attempted to remain exclusive, however it appears that the demand for the iPhone was just to high for Apple pass up the interested Verizon clientele.
